A JEDEC matrix tray is a molded tray with a grid of pockets that hold fine-pitch or large ICs (QFP, QFN, BGA, connectors) flat and protected. Each part keeps a known row/column orientation the machine indexes, and delicate leads or BGA balls are shielded better than in tape.
On the machine
Needs a tray feeder or manual tray station; protects leads and balls but holds fewer parts than a reel.
